La Cage aux Folles, the groundbreaking musical by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman, opened on Broadway on August 21, 1983. It proved to be a huge success, running for 1,761 performances and winning six out of the nine Tony Awards for which it was nominated, including Best Musical.

It tells the story of a gay couple who are put in the awkward position of having to meet the strict conservative parents of their son's fiancee. The fantastic music by Jerry Herman is still beloved after all these years and the song I Am What I Am has even become something of a standard.
